The base can sit or stand, and has a speed control dial that easily slows or speeds the spinner bowl, and a control that allows you to switch between clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation of the bowl. I am a newbie to beading bracelets, I had this spinner set up and actually beading within 5 minutes, it is as easy as 1...2...3! There are 2 needles included, 1 for seed beads and another for clay beads, both fit within the magnetic stand so you do not even have to hold it!
